Timeout Settings

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hello:

On a Terminal Server, there is a timeout setting where GP users are kicked off of the server after ten minutes of idle activity.

As long as such users are not conducting processes in GP, such as running check links or conducting year-end, does such a setting cause harm?  Would it cause performance degredation (i.e. "slowness")?

If not, then what would cause GP to run slowly, when users are conducting year-end processes?  What can be done to improve system performance when such resource intense processes such as year-end closing are being conducted?

Thanks!

John

    Hi John,

Yes this can definitely cause some harm but it shouldn't be anything major so long as the users are truly inactive.

As far as improving performance for year end there are several things you can do but you should consult with an experienced GP partner before implementing any of these.

One thing I do for year end is disabling any scheduled backup tasks. We run manual backups between each step so it isn't critical to have the system backing itself up while we are running year end. I believe you can also change the recovery model of the databases from Full to Simple which should speed things up. Once again please talk to your partner before trying either of these options.

    Regards,

    Kirk
