GP 2010 to 2015?

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Is it possible to upgrade directly from GP 2010 to GP 2015 or do I have to go through 2013 first?

Beat is right on as usual. I would clarify the following. Your first approach would be to create a Test environment, install your new version of SQL (2012/2014), then restore your Dynamics and Company Databases to the new server. Install GP 2015 (try a most recent release) and run the utilities against the databases. In a perfect world, this will work.  If it does not, then you need to assess how much time you are willing to invest in troubleshooting the direct path upgrade, or whether or not you should upgrade to GP 2013 as an interim step.  I am leaving out a myriad of steps, but if you read the upgrade documentation you should be fine.

    Hi John

No there is no need to 'install' GP 2010 as such.. you just have to restore your prior GP2010 SQL backups on the new SQL server, install the new release of GP (2013 or 2015), and run the upgrade with GP Utilities.

As Harry re-enforced, there is no big time-saving of jumping directly to 2015 when coming from 2010, because you may actually run into some road-blocks due to version gap, in particular when it comes to 3rd party products and customization.. If you're not in a hurry, take the time to do the intermediate upgrade, quickly test it to check that everything works fine and do the final upgrade after that.

Do I "need" to install GP 2010 and SQL 2008 on Server 2012 prior to installing and upgrading to GP 2015, or can I put SQL 2014 directly on Server 2012, copy my existing 2008 DB in the mix and then install GP 2015?

    RE: GP 2010 to 2015?

    Very true Harry,

My test GP 2015 (RTM) was actually upgraded from my previous test from 2010R2 (SP5) to 2013R2, and I dind't recall having encountered major issues (aside of some 3rd party products) for 2015.

If you owned Extender/Builder series, make sure you get in touche with eOne Solutions, as you're going to hit some roadblocks with the product, as Microsoft returned the module to eOne in GP 2013... and some tables requires special attention (and scripts to run), otherwise Extender might pop-up after each start of GP asking to complete the setup :-)..

    RE: GP 2010 to 2015?

Beat and Tim are correct. It is possible to go directly from GP 2010 to GP 2015.  Tim's detailed response is very accurate. There has been a bit of confusion about the service pack that needs to be installed on GP 2010 prior to upgrade. Microsoft's site lists only a SP4 for GP 2010; however, there was a Year-End-Update for 2014, which has been identified by numerous people as SP5.

Tim is also absolutely right that you can count on the GP 2015 RTM (Release To Manufacturing) version to upgrade from this specific version of GP 2010. Trying to upgrade to other releases of the GP 2015 version (i.e. R2) has caused a headache or two, leading to some posts in the forum.

There are other things to consider like Server Operating System and SQL Server version. I have found that SQL server 2008R2 requires some finesse to install on Windows 2012 R2. I have been upgrading clients to GP 2015 on Windows Server 2012 R2 using SQL Server 2014, and this mix has worked well.

One final word on the upgrade process. It seems there is an obsession with upgrading directly from GP 2010 to GP2015, which I assume is meant to save time. If this approach requires any significant troubleshooting, the stated purpose is voided. The process of upgrading from GP 2010 to GP2013 and then to GP 2015 (not running GP 2013, just stepping through this version) has proven very effective at avoiding issues related to the direct upgrade path. So, if you begin the direct from GP 2010 to GP 2015 process, and experience major difficulties. it might be prudent to use a multi-step upgrade path instead.

Yes.  I am (currently) going from GP 2010 SP2 to GP 2010 SP5 to GP 2015 RTM.

    Tim

P.S. I have seen what I call SP 5 referred to as SP 4 with a year-end Payroll update.
