D365 FO and Power BI

hi

It appears that there are two ways we can use Power BI in D365 FO.

1) Entity store -> BYOD -> PowerBI.com -> Add link to the report from Application.

2) Entity store -> Power BI Embedded

Is there any reason why one would use option no (1) rather than (2)? I am asking because it appears that we need to purchase SQL Server premium edition to enable option no (1) which is rather costly.

Any help is appreciated.

Regards

That is correct from COGS perspective. Even the link from MS states that but in a different way. Why data lake should be preferred above BYOD...The same is applicable to Embedded Power BI over BYOD. Only issue is that you can't do any data mix-up as you can do in BYOD. if that's not your requirement, Embedded Power BI is the way to proceed at this point.

Reduction in COGS for customers (reduce usage of BYOD).

Thanks. So best option is to go with embedded Power BI report for now and wait data lake feature to stabilize? BYOD option seems very costly since we will need SQL Server premium edition to host BYOD data.

    Hello Harry,

Before trying to make the BYOD integration, read the info on the forthcoming changes in regards to the data lake:

    docs.microsoft.com/.../erp-data-entity-store-byod-business-data-lake

    docs.microsoft.com/.../whats-new-platform-25

    Best regards,

    Ludwig

With BYOD you have option to export your entities to your own Azure SQL DB  whereas with Entity store you refresh measurements in AXDW database. There are some inbuilt measurements but building your own measures and dimensions using perspective node within application explorer is painful task.  Entities are much easier to build compared to building measurements. If you are looking for difference between them look at this link , it will help you get better understanding.
