    Yes, you can use ValueRule in DisplayRule of the Cancel and Resolve buttons.

    for a specific case type as we have 6 different case types....  thanks for your assistance

    This can not be done via field security profile as it is applicable only to the fields, not the command bar buttons. But this can be achieved by customizing case entity ribbon.
