In Dynamics 365 for Operations, I tried the following. Created two new items with 'Moving average' costing. Both items had two color variants Black and Blue. For one of the items, I enabled the flag for tracking 'cost by variant' and for the other the same was not enabled. I did multiple receipt transactions for both items (both colors) at different prices and then made one issue transaction. It looks like, irrespective of the flag enabled or not, item cost is maintained at the color level. i.e. issue cost is the average of only a particular color and not averaging the receipt price of both colors. Is it the normal behavior of AX? If so, we won't be able to maintain cost at the item level and it will be always at the dimension level (or variant level). Also the flag 'cost by variant' has no significance.

I am finding that I can see inventory journal receipt transactions by variant, which includes both unit price and total Amount. However I am not getting a physical cost for issue transactions at the product variant level. I only get a physical cost price at issue if I have selected last cost price update on the product master. Of course the cost price at product master is only one cost price rather than by variant. Is this expected functionality?
Hi Sreehari,
The cost will be maintained variant level, However cost calculation will be dependent on transaction and average cost. regardless costing version.
Thanks

Thanks Nagendra.
What about non-std cost items? The cost will be always maintained at item variant level?
Hi Sreehari,
Cost by variant is used for standard cost method, to capture cost at variant level, So that the issue and receipts will be settled based on the cost activated.
In your case when you say moving average, System will take average of receipts to issues based on the transactions.
