Reports OOB - Column Limits

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

I have a customer who wants to out together and Invoice Journal report.  I have all data from all AX entities in CRM.  Using the OOB CRM Reports, I am getting an error when adding all of the columns (in the Lay out Fields area) and clicking next.

Is there a maximum number of columns you cannot exceed in CRM?  This report has 37 columns.

Thanks in advance.

    Hi

Please enable trace in CRM or check log in event viewer. But my suggestion why don't you go through SSRS? Do you have any specific reason not going SSRS report

IF it is CRM online you can even use fetch xml query to generate report.

I am trying to create this report without SSRS, using solely out of the box reports in CRM 2016.   I am able to pull in 29 columns from 5 entities...i cannot get any further as I get a "Error.  An error has occurred" generic error, with no log file attached.  I suppose it is because this report has Invoice Header, Invoice Line Item, Item, Sales Order, and Customer - 5 entities.  I guess I am stuck and cannot achieve this report in CRM.

    Hi Chrisbra,

Unfortunately, I can't find the exact number from an official Microsoft site.  What I did do though trying it out.

I managed to create a report using Report Wizard with 60+ fields which include String, Lookup, and Date fields (from primary Entity Contact) and also String, Lookup fields from the secondary entity (Account).  Please see the image below.  In saying that, I've had situations in the past where the Report Wizard didn't like having certain fields for some reason, even with far less number of fields.

I suggest try and remove some fields, especially lookup ones and see if it makes any difference.  If not, you can always use an SSRS report.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,

    Nadeeja

Hi, thanks for the response.  Clearly there are limitations.  I would not have posted this question otherwise.  My question was "Is there a maximum number of columns you cannot exceed in CRM?  This report has 37 columns".

I want to know how close I am to created this report OOB.  So I wanted to know the limitation on number of columns.  No one seems to know what the specific number is.

    Hi Chrisbra,

There are limitations in Report Wizard with numbers columns you can add.  To find out other limitations, please check out below article.

I would suggest using an SSRS report for this particular report.

    Cheers,

    Nadeeja
