Possible to post partial credit note for Sales Order Prepayment Invoices?

I have a few prepayment invoices issued for a sale order. How do I create credit note for just 1 prepayment invoice? The only option from Sales Order will create a credit note for all prepayment invoices, which I do not want.

The question was asked in the general forum, but it's clearly about a particular D365 product. I think it's Business Central, therefore I've moved the thread to the Business Central forum.

Think you might have to credit all and then re-issue the prepayment invoices required.

It would be easier to reverse the full prepayment invoice and then just repost it.

You can also just manually create a credit memo and then apply it to that prepayment invoice in the customer subledger.

See below, I have a credit memo I created manually and then applied it to a prepayment invoice:

You can see the remaining amount is reduced by the credit memo amount:

Make sure on the credit memo to use the same GL Account as the customer prepaid account from the sales order.

This is standard behavior; if you have any new ideas, you can submit them to Microsoft.

Missing a feature? Post or vote for ideas on: aka.ms/BCIdeas

    Hello,

In standard Business Central, you cannot directly select and credit only one specific posted prepayment invoice from the Sales Order; Microsoft documents that Post Prepayment Credit Memo is designed to cancel the invoiced prepayments for the order, not a chosen historical prepayment document. If you need to reverse only part of the prepayment, the standard approach is to adjust the Prepayment % / prepayment amount on the relevant sales lines and post the prepayment credit memo for the required reduction, rather than selecting a specific posted prepayment invoice number. If the business requirement is specifically “reverse prepayment invoice X only” while leaving the other prepayment invoices untouched as individual documents, that would require customization.

If prepayment invoices have been posted, you will need to credit them likely before reducing the prepayment %

    Hello,

The link below provides instructions on how to handle this requirement using Acumens Customer Deposits & Prepayments Management app for Business Central.

The solution supports partial credit notes for prepayment invoices, allowing a credit note to be posted against a specific prepayment invoice. The posted credit note is then reflected in the deposit/prepayment tracking with the invoiced deposit amount updated accordingly. This provides better visibility and control when managing multiple prepayment invoices and partial reversals.

    Check the app here: https://acumens.com/Blog/optimizing-sales-order-prepayments-business-central/#partial-credit-note-for-prepayment-invoices

Hi, the prepayment credit memo doesn't work per invoice. It looks at the difference between what has already been invoiced as prepayment on the lines and what the prepayment amount on the lines says now. So it reverses an amount, not a document.

Which also gives you the way around it. Lower the Prepmt. Line Amount Excl. VAT on the lines so the total drops by exactly the amount of that one invoice, then post the prepayment credit memo. Only that difference gets credited, the older ones stay as they are.

The credit gets spread over the lines by their prepayment amounts, so it doesn't point at that one invoice document, and if you need them matched you apply the credit memo to it by hand in the Customer Ledger Entries after.

Glad to help - follow up if anything is unclear.

►  If this solved it, marking it verified helps others too.

    Hi @Grigorios Mavrogeorgis ,

This is the error when I tried to lower the Prepmt. Line Amount Excl. VAT on the lines i do not wish to issue prepayment credit note for.
