GP Performance issues after Windows updates

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

I know this is kind of a vague question and a longshot for a solid solution, but I was wondering if anyone has come across something similar in their adventures.

Every month, our client's IT team installs windows updates on all the server machines (SQL, terminal server, etc.). The servers are rebooted, and the update seems to complete without issue. The next day, when users start trying to log in to GP through the terminal server, they have massive performance issues. Usually they will try restarting the server a few times, and by the afternoon, everything seems to be back to normal. There aren't any outstanding processes or applications that seem to be eating up resources.

It's certainly not a showstopper, but I'm curious what might be happening. I haven't had a chance to get on the server when the performance is bad, since they just brought it up to us now after it happening consistently for 4 months. Does anyone have tips on what we should look at next month when it is time to install updates? Any tools we can run to try to trace back to what the cause is?

    Kyle,

For what it's worth, I've not seen what you are describing happen on any of our own or our clients' installations. While I can see some things being a little slower the first time they are accessed (per Kirk's post - some things may need to be recreated or spun up, which may take a little longer), none of these should cause "massive performance issues". And the fact that another reboot (or a few) fixes this seems strange if a reboot caused the problem to begin with.

It would be helpful to know what specifically has performance issues, as this could mean so many different things. It would also be helpful to understand more about the GP environment and all the products that are involved, as that could also be very different from one company to another.

I would think the first step would be to look at the server next time this happens to see what is going on. Or perhaps a test reboot off hours might be a good idea - take the updates out of the equation, reboot the server(s), maybe one at a time, and see if everything is still working as expected?

    Hi Kyle,

It is possible that the reboot is trashing any stored execution plans which requires the server to re-create them. Take a look at this post regarding SQL Server reboots community.dynamics.com/.../155809.

    Regards,

RE: GP Performance issues after Windows updates

Again, not perfect relationship to question or comment, but . . .

We have a client IT team that does the same tasks you describe and early last spring there was in update that caused all access to Business Portal and GP running on Terminal Server to fail totally.  We were only ever able to run GP on Terminal Server.  Business Portal failed to operate correctly until we removed a couple of different 'recently installed' service packs for the Windows Server updates just installed.

Since that time, the IT department is required to run the Updates in UAT first - prove that they dont cause issues with GP, BP or anything else.  At that time, they are then able to get sign off to continue the update on the Production Servers.

Since that time, we have not had any issues with updates.  Know this is not perfect help, however, it is confirmation that some updates do cause issues.

What I might suggest is to document all the Service Packs that are being planned to be installed and prior to running install, check with you or your Microsoft Dynamics partner.

Hope this helps.  Good luck and post more to share and learn more.
