Restore PROD data in DEV

Posted on by 185

Hi,

We would like to test/play with production data. As part of that , I am thinking of below approaches. Please suggest me.

1) Restore Production DB in Dev instance  : If I follow this , does the solutions also gets modified ? I mean , unmanaged solutions from DEV will replaced with PROD managed solutions ?

2) Create a trail version and then restore production DB in it : Does this possible ?

Note : All our environments are Dynamics 365 online versions

RE: Restore PROD data in DEV

    Hi,

I suggest you to create a Sandbox and make a full copy of your production and do the test/play with newly created sandbox before touching actual Production copy.

    Answering to your questions,

    1) Restore Production DB in Dev instance  : If I follow this , does the solutions also gets modified ? I mean , unmanaged solutions from DEV will replaced with PROD managed solutions ?

Solutions works on layers, so the customizations which are already there in production will remain as unmanages but any extra customization will be imported as managed - but you can customize some of the changes if they have "Manage Properties" as True.

see the link for better understanding - docs.microsoft.com/.../introduction-solutions

    2) Create a trail version and then restore production DB in it : Does this possible ?

No, You can only move the customizations but not data. if you want to have full copy then you need to create Sandbox under same tandent and perform full copy of production.

Identify the entities and migrate the data only for those entities in your Development environment. If you go with trial instance you need to import the solution first to so that all your customization will move except data . For data you need to do again data migration.

Do not restore the database from production to DEV , it will remove all your additional customization . So the recommended way data migration from production to dev and not the customization.

You can test with trial version installing solution and migrate prod data in the trial instance .
