Yes, that does help.
I'm wondering if Business portal needs to be a server of its own (an additional physical server) or if the existing server which is our Intranet server can be upgraded and host both our Intranet sites and content and also host Business Portal.

Firstly, you are on the right forum.
To my best understanding, Business Portal does not need to be installed on the existing website (Sharepoint Site, in your case). All it require is a Sharepoint Service and it is present on the server. Create a separate Application Pool and Website for BP (which is a part of the BP Installation procedure).
In fact, it is recommended that you create a separate Application Pool and Website, in order to avoid mutual dependency of BP and existing site(s). If one fails and is down due to some reason, the other will still be up and running.
