SQL 2019 Compatibility with GP 2018 R2

Posted on by 245

Hello,

I have a customer that is upgrading to GP 2018 R2, and they would like to put it on a SQL 2019 instance. I do not see it as supported in the system requirements document on Partner Source. Do you have an ETA on when it will be tested, and listed as compatible?

    My vote is to call it GP 2020. That would look much better than GP 2018 R3. Having it based on a previous year makes it look old. We need to be forward looking.

    You don't want them to do this for a few reasons...

    1. SQL 2019 is still in CTP (Community Technology Preview) - Thus not even released officially - Anticipated April 2019?;
    2. Dynamics 2018R2 doesn't list SQL 2019 as a supported SQL Server - This means:
      1. There could be SQL features from supported versions (SQL 2014 + ) that may not exist in SQL2019;
      2. If you do a work around to make it run on SQL 2019, when you go to apply any update / patch then the Dynamics GP Upgrade WILL FAIL;
      3. Have any of your 3rd party products tested it and approved support on SQL 2019? - I would not think so, since SQL 2019, is not official;

    I do understand why some would want to move to the newest and minimize costs in the future.

    The main NEW features in SQL 2019 are cool and exciting, but from a Dynamics GP perspective have NO affect.

    Moving to SQL2017, I would highly recommend.

    It has many new features you could take advantage of outside of the Dynamics GP program, but again, Dynamics GP and thus the 3rd party products still need to make the product work with the lowest denominator, which is SQL2014.

    Thus, the newest SQL features that would be built-in to Dynamics GP 2018R2 are the newest features that are in SQL2014.

    I hope this helps and gives you the information to pass to your customer....

    Update:

    The plan is to look at having Dynamics GP 2018 R3, due out this fall, to be compatible with both Windows Server 2019 and SQL Server 2019.

    Right now there isn't any guarantee on this, but that is the current plan.

    Thanks

    There's not an ETA of when SQL 2019 will be tested with Dynamics GP 2018 R2.

    If and when it is, it will show in the System Requirements page for GP 2018/R2. Until then, it hasn't been tested and thus not supported.

    Thanks
