Hi:

Although it affects performance and especially when regenerating the Planning Worksheet, shouldn't the toggle for Dynamic Low-Level Code be enabled in "Manufacturing Setup"?

Hello John,

Yes, Dynamic Low-Level Code should generally be enabled to keep BOM hierarchy levels automatically updated and ensure correct multilevel planning; however, Microsoft notes that it can negatively affect performance in environments with large BOM structures. In that case, you can disable it, but then you must run the Calculate Low-Level Code batch job before calculating a supply plan, ideally through a scheduled job queue outside working hours.

Always enabled! The risk of it being missed prior to planning is too high. As Zhu pointed out, it is still important to run it manually, with frequency dependent on the amount of BOM status changes the client performs. Fewer deletions or non-certified changes mean it can be run manually less frequently. If they constantly remove or de-certify old BOMs, they will need to run it manually more often.

Hi,

I think there's a small mix-up here. Dynamic Low-Level Code doesn't fire when you regenerate the Planning Worksheet, it fires when you certify a production BOM. Calculate Plan just reads whatever low-level codes are already on the items, it doesn't recalculate them itself. So the performance hit you're thinking about only happens at BOM certification time, not during planning runs.
Because of that, yes, it should normally stay enabled, Microsoft's own guidance is to keep it on in almost all cases, it also catches circular references in your BOM when certifying which is genuinely useful.

The only real reason to turn it off is if you have a huge number of items and BOMs, tens of thousands plus, where certifying gets noticeably slow, then you switch to the manual Calculate Low-Level Code batch job and run it on a schedule instead through job queue.
