Accessing Financial Dimensions from PowerApps

We are building several PowerApp solutions and a common occurrence is we would like to access the financial dimensions to consume values.  Example, when on a Project Form we would get the Department, etc. that is currently set for the financial dimension within this recitative record lookup.  Currently, the only item we can achieve is the DimensionDisplayValue field for the Project Entity displays our company location which is good however how do we access our other financial dimensions that are also set on a project?  Is this article relevant for this situation and what needs to occur?

Any guidance is appreciated.

    Hello Dudditz,

    The article refers to findims that you can make visible in Excel templates, which seems to be unrelated to your PowerApp.

    Do you need a list of all available financial dimensions and their elements in your PowerApp?

    What is it that you want to do with those data once you see them in the App?

    Hi Ludwig,

    We have built a Integrated PowerApp that consumes data depending where you are such as on the Customer form or on the Project form that allows the employee to generate a series of Sharepoint Document Sets & folders based upon Dynamics Fields.  Example: when we generate a project we require more robust document handing that Sharepoint offers.  The PowerApp builds a Sharepoint Document set and series of subfolders based upon fields consumed from the Project form.  There is some additional information that we would like to include as Sharepoint metadata that exists within the dimensions such as Department, location, etc.  When I am on a project form I see the dimension and values and they are what I am trying to get.  The PowerApp provides links back to these generated folders and we also filter on values so only specific items are showed in relation to the currently selected project.  So basically, I am looking for the related dimension values for the current project I have opened or selected.  There are other scenarios where we would want to do the same thing.

    Hi Dudditz,

    You can use the next document to add dimension values as individual columns. docs.microsoft.com/.../dimensions-overview

    Also, you can use Finncial dimension configuration for integration and use some functions to split or find a value as part of a full dimension string: docs.microsoft.com/.../financial-dimension-configuration-integration

    Hi Andre, thank you for your feedback.  Regarding the first option I have reviewed this before and my concern is this is specific to Excel.  Do you know if this would also be applicable to PowerApps?

    Hi Dudditz,

    In fact the first option is changing Odata entities. Excel is using Odata, but PowerApps are using the same entities. I do agree, the documentation is focussing too much on Excel, but I would give it a try.

    Hi, 

    In the project entity, you can access the default findims that have been set for a specific project. 

    This allows you getting started with your Sharepoint integration / linkage.

    Hi Ludwig,

    This is more or less the question.  We would like to access the other dimensions that are set at a project from within PowerApps.  Like you in your example we have also been able to use the 'Default dimension display value' within PowerApps to return one of our four dimensions from within a project.  Currently our 'Default dimension display value' returns the green dimension in the image which is good however we are trying to determine how to access the set values of the other 3 dimensions.  We have located various entities that seem to have the dimension names however no relations or related values to the projects so it's not clear if and how we would even return these other 3 fields. 

    Examples,

    To clarify what you said for me:

    When you select the default dimension element from the project entity then you are seeing only the location findim value but the other default findim values are blank even though you have specified default findims for the region, service line and so on.

    Is that right?

    I think we are close,

    So in the following image have a PowerApp drop down control configured to the Project Entity and the 'Default dimension display value' field.  This works great, it will return the Location Dimension as seen marked by the green rectangle, the values populate with the correct values as expected.

    The issue we can't overcome is that within PowerApps it is not clear how to access our other dimensions in red such as Division, Region, ServiceLine.  There is one field with a name  'Default dimension display value' and no other fields with similar names from the project entity or obvious names that would return these other dimension values.  How do we access the values from these 3 other dimensions similar to how we have the location dimension.  I apologize if I am not explaining this clearly, we are relativity new to FinOps and the dimension seem quite tricky.

    but the other default findim values are blank even though you have specified default findims for the region, service line and so on. - How do we locate the other dimension fields within powerapps?  I am not seeing them within the Project entity, is there some type of logic, lookup, etc. that can be used?
