Add or get rid of columns in popup list screens

How do we add or remove columns to/from screens like this? We want the user to just be able type the code vs having it search against name as well as they type in US and then have to scroll down to US. In other scenarios we want to display additional columns. If I remember correctly, in v22 we could customize/personalize these, but cannot anymore.

    You can also meet the 1st requirement by simply typing "US" and clicking off the field..
     
     
    If you still really want to hide the name here is the code - but it removes it from the underlaying "select from full list" also, which might be a problem?

    A developer has to customize the system to add/remove fields. Its not possible and never was out of the box.
