Metadata service, Plugin Registration Tool and related functionality not working after GAC update

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi,

We have a D365 CE version 9.0.2.3034 instance running  on our development environment. Both SQL Server & CRM are on the same server machine.

Few days back our team performed a deployment activity of an SSIS package on the same server on which CRM is installed and for that they registered version 9 SDK dlls in GAC of the CRM server.

Since then (Assuming as don't exactly remember when this issue appeared), CRM Metadata service is not working and due to that PluginRegistrationTool is not able to connect to any organization on the server. Same issue is happening with XrmToolBox's CRM Metadata Browser plugin & a similar ripple seems to have affected the Ribbon Workbench where the plugin is not able to load the list of available WebResources from the lookup in Javascript Rule's Action section. This is affecting our team's development.

The root cause of it being due to GAC SDK installation is just an assumption and I have strong belief that it is due to that but it could be something else too.

Resolution/Query: Would Running CRM Server Installation again & running the Repair tool resolve this issue, is there any alternate way to fix this issue. What ripples/issues I might face after running the repair tool of CRM Server or it wont affect anything in our current CRM Organizations? Any prompt help is appreciated.

I also checked the CRM server machine, the SDK dlls do not exist in GAC, seems like this issue is either not due to that SSIS work or I'm not sure currently. Any other way to resolve that metadata service issue. Will CRM Repair fix this?

    Hi Darshik,

I tried registering the same version DLLs in GAC again but without stopping the D365,SQL & IIS Services. Issue seems to be still there.

I used the following command to register the correct version of DLL to GAC, I did not specifically mention to copy it in MSIL and did it like this, just like it was done the first time :

    "C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\gacutil.exe" /i "C:\GAC work\DLLs\v9\Microsoft.Xrm.Sdk.dll"

    Is this okay ?

Do you think stopping them before running the gacutil tool to reregister the dlls and then starting them again is worth a try, I will do it again.

    Thanks,

    Hi Shaheer,

    follow the steps,

Stop – All the Dynamics 365 Services

       Stop – All SQL Services

       Stop – IIS Services

Take backup and replace same mscrm vesion  DLL on GAC_MSIL

Start all the CRM , SQL and IIS Services.

    Regards,

    Darshik
