Checking work centre availability for speculative production orders

Is there a way to be able to see if there is the ability to fulfil a production order based on current work centre load without creating the production order as planned/firm planned?

For example, if I create a new Production BOM which contains lots of other top level parts (each of which requires production), is there a way to input a due date and see whether there is the ability to fulfil that based on work centre availability?

What I don't want to have to do is create loads of production orders for all levels just to check if the availability to fulfil it is there, and then have to delete them all afterwards if there isn't capacity.

I was hoping a simulated production order would do the job but it appears that all this does is calculate costs.

Just to make sure: you ran your MRP and now you have production orders in your MRP and you want to check the capacity?

Have you tried "Work Center Load" report? Looks like you can filter based on Status of Production order. Which if they are on MRP it is Planned. Also, you can go to Work Center then Related -> Work Center -> Load then see them as week or month. Open Allocated then remove Allocated filter to see Planned production order and sum up to see if you have capacity or not.
