How are Workflow Action Submenus Dynamically Generated in D365FO?

Hi Team,

I am currently working with workflows in Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations and trying to understand how the workflow action menu is dynamically generated at runtime.

For a custom workflow, I understand that the Workflow button is enabled dynamically based on the workflow status. However, when I click the Workflow button, it displays different submenu actions depending on the current workflow state.

For example:

  • Before submission → Submit
  • After submission → Recall, View History, etc.
  • Depending on the workflow status, the available actions change dynamically.

I would like to understand where these workflow submenu items are being generated and what is responsible for determining which actions are displayed at runtime.

I have tried debugging the workflow execution and menu-related code at several points, but I have not been able to identify the main method/class responsible for dynamically building these submenu items.

Could anyone please point me in the right direction regarding:

  1. Which class/method is responsible for generating the workflow action submenus?
  2. Is there a framework class or method that I should focus on while debugging this behavior?
  3. If possible, could you provide an example or debugging approach to trace the Submit → Recall → View History menu generation?

Any guidance on where to start debugging this framework functionality would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

    Hi,

I never wondered what exact coding is responsible for dynamically showing the options as it was always working correctly for the workflows I used and developed. From your question, I'm not able to understand if you have a workflow where the workflow isn't showing the correct menu items for you or for maybe other users. You mentioned the word debugging. Do you have an issue or do you just want to know how it is working under the hood?
If it is out of curiosity, have a look at the class SysWorkflowFormControls. The triggering is managed using the class SysSetupFormRun_Workflow.

Hi @André Arnaud de Cal... ,
I’m new to the concept of workflows and asked this question mainly to understand how the workflow functionality works under the hood.

As you mentioned, the SysWorkflowFormControls class, particularly the updateControls method, is responsible for dynamically handling the workflow menu options. I’ll explore this further to better understand how the workflow menu items change based on the workflow state.

Thank you for your explanation and for pointing me in the right direction.
