GP2010 Features for Budgeting - Extender versus AA?

Posted on by 65

Hello, my company recently upgraded to GP2010.  With that we also have Forecaster, Analytical Accounting, Extender, and Analysis Cubes.  I am used to the Dynamics AX world with dimensions built into our COA, but our current structure is simply XXXXX-XXX-XX-XX, where the prefix is the account and the following three digits are department (the second two are not used).  I need to employ more dimensions in my analysis to fit how we model our business but I am not familiar with AA, Extender, and Analysis Cubes.  Can someone provide an explanation as to the differences and which one is better for budgeting?

    Mr. Clay,

    Thanks for your reply.

Forecaster is flexible enough to be reliable for budgeting and financial analysis, and as it is currently available for you to try, you can proceed with the installation and testing.

Personally I would suggest requesting the Dynamics GP 10.0 SP3 VPC from your VAR as Microsoft guys have installed and activated the forecaster with enough data to generate results.

Take a look into the below article:

    Mr. Daoud,

Thank you very much for the response.  If I may also ask you directly - what is your opinion of Forecaster?  We have a fairly complex business model with manufacturing, inventory, and subscription service.  At the same time we are trying to incorporate an application to support this (we are currently painfully using a very large Excel budget model with complex formulas and external links).  I am not too impressed with the Forecaster interface but I also do not want to spend additional funds if we already have an adequate tool (Forecaster) in place.  I am impressed with your CV and Microsoft expertise, but would appreciate an objective response to Forecaster.  Thank you in advance.

AA, Extender and Analysis Cubes are all have different domain of usage:

Extender is used to add additional "fields" to any form and does not actually affect your COA.

Analysis Cubes is used to generate reports from Dynamics GP to excel that represents summarized information and generate the excel pivot table automatically.

Analytical Accounting is your choice; it adds unlimited dimensions to your accounts with flexibility in reporting, data entry and budgeting were you can combine budgets between Analytical dimensions over all linked accounts per period.
