Change RMS 2.0 Registers from old computers to new with windows 7

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

We currently have a retail computer store running on RMS version 2.0 on Windows XP systems.
Their are three registers and one back room computer that holds the database all of them are running on Windows XP pro would like to change the machines to new machines and reinstall the software we run a computer store and we have machines ready to be installed with windows 7 pro just wondering if anybody has any text documentation or could point us in the right direction on how to make the change thank you for your help. We originally purchased quicksell 2000 back in 2000 we converted it to RMS in 2004 we change the backroom computers that access the database to Windows 7 and converted them with no problems. Just wondering about the actual registers with the licensing issues we're going to run into any problems. We would appreciate any help on this issue thank you very much.

    Hello Fred,

    Thank you for your question.

You can reuse your license keys, however you may need to activate via telephone rather than internet to complete the installation.

Other than that the install can be completed normally.

For more information on installing and configuring RMS, you can use the following documentation:

    Thank you,

In order to reduce any potential impact to your present operations or revenues Microsoft encourages customers to work directly with Microsoft Partners. If you have access to Customer or PartnerSource to the files you need. If a case is opened, directions required for the process can be provided, Microsoft support does not perform the installation services for you, but they most certainly can provide you with the direction. The direction is specific to the task however "which means how to install and upgrade RMS on a Windows 7 machine" and what files are needed. It does not mean, now that I've updated, I need help connecting to my database, setting up my printer, my scanner, and let's set up my EDC for credit cards also within the same case. That is an installation which Microsoft does not perform. There is a great deal to consider within the process and directions specific to the task can be provided in a heartbeat. Having a case open however does not include any support outside of the scope or the direction provided which does need to be considered before the process is started.

Do you have your license keys? I just did this very thing (migrated from XP platforms to Win 7) On our new hardware I went ahead and installed and configured administrator, linked up to database and had the configuration done before attempting to activate with one of my keys (have database on a back office and two installed lanes). However, when configuring on new system in administrators forgot TO CLICK THE REGISTER TAB AND CHANGE THE REGISTER NUMBER TO 1,2,3 whatever, depending on which register it will be. By default it was "1" and this ruined my day when at activation it replied "register 1 is already active". To register simply pull down your old lane, plug in your new system and open POS. Enter your product key and click next until you see activate by phone or internet. Select phone and click next. You will have a screen with a pull down menu for your location. When you select your location it will give you the number to call and you give the technician your instance ID. The will give you numbers to enter into the boxes and as long as you pulled down register 1 and configured this hardware to again be register 1 (and so on for lanes 2,3 and beyond) you should be good to go!

As long as you have your license keys, you can migrate and just re-register.  You will probably have to call Microsoft from the activation screen.

You will want to update to 2.0.2000 version.  Also there will be some fixes as far as html status showing in white.
