Enhance UX / colorize with unsupported JS - OK or BAD?

Posted on by 85

From a UX perspective I think Dynamics 365 will be much better if we add some colors to forms, sections etc.

I now this is NOT supported, BUT as we all know, it is possible with some javascript.

How BAD is this? I am not sure... I have collegues who strongly disagree, but what is the worst thing that can happen? Colors dissappear after an upgrade? Maybe a JS error?

Other more supported ways to enhance UX?

From the top of my mind:

  • Custom pages
  • Embedded canvas apps
  • PCF controls
  • Thoughtful form setup/design
  • .....?

Dynamics 365 UI changes quickly so you may need to update and test your code every upgrade.

Your JS may need to execute more than once since component(DOM) rendering is random.

If you change the colors after the dom shows, user may notice this change, I don't think it is a better UX.

MS would not give support if issues related to this code.

On the last, yes the worst issue would be colors disappear and some JS error

    Hello,

Dom injections should not harm that much. The worst-case scenario - with the update you might get your formatting to disappear and/or JavaScript errors. Anyway, I won't recommend going in that direction.

All options you listed are the supported approach. Another possible option is the usage of Html/JS web resources.
