GP client slow on Windows 2008 server

Posted on by 900

Hello:

I have an older Citrix Presentation Server 4.5/Windows 2003 server farm.  The GP client runs well and is fast to load on those machines.  This system is for our remote users.

For internal users, I have a Windows 2008 (64 bit) Farm.  The GP client is very slow to load (on the server, not even in TS mode).  It can take one minute or more for the initial screen to finally load so the users can enter a password.

For troubleshooting I have removed anti-virus, tried different combatibility modes.  I'm at a loss as to what to try next.  These servers have plenty of resources so I think it must be something with GP.  I've removed the Exchange connection at start up (since we don't use Exchange).  It seems to be related to Windows 2008, but this is the only application on the servers that behaive this way.

Suggestions appreciated,

Tom

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: GP client slow on Windows 2008 server

I think I found the issue.  GP checks the MS site each time it loads for tax table updates.  The two terminal servers were not able to access the Internet, due to the way Terminal Server Session Broker is configured.  I "broke" that configuration, servers can access the Internet, GP client loads normally.

I still get an error about "dexterity" but I'll start another thread if I need assistance.

    Thanks for the recommendations!

Hi Tom, nothing unusual in eithre file. I've seen the /data folder on another 2008 install, but this wouldn't (I don't think) create a perormance issue. The 64 bit difference could be somthing though. I'll dig around and see if I can come up with anything.

    Talk later.

Yes, the problem is local and via Terminal Services.  What I see on the Windows 2003 servers (Citrix and GP runs fine on those) is the app path is c:\program files\microsoft dynamics\gp  while on the 2008 servers (one 32-bit and one 64-bit) there is also a c:\program files (x86\microsoft dynamics\gp folder.

the dynamics.set file had pointers to gp\data for the dictionary files when those files are under GP.  It seems that under 2008 32-bit and 64 bit the install sprinkles files under program files and program files (x86) and that might be part of the issue.

    Tom,

Do you experience the same slow performance if you log into the server locally as 'the built-in account for administering the computer/domain'?

    Hi Tom,

The dex.ini will be in the application folder (probably C:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics\GP). Take the one from the client that is slow.

Open the dex.ini in notepad and paste the contents into an email to me if you want, and I will review for anything strange.

    Best regards,

    Ian.

The dynamics.set file looks the same on the server running dynamics/SQL as the Terminal servers.

Can you give me some more info on the dex.ini and SQL trace?  I don't see a dex.ini on any of the servers.

Re: Re: Re: GP client slow on Windows 2008 server

Thank you gentlemen.  I'll give those a try.  I'm new to the GP client, so any suggestions are most helpful.  I'll give these a try and report back.

I removed A/V from the servers, but the client still lags.  I'll try your suggestions tomorrow and report back.

The Citrix farm is not in Active Directory, while the Terminal Server 2008 system is, so there's much to troubleshoot.

In addition to Ian's great tips, check to make sure there isn't a Dex/SQL trace running.  That will slow down login and performance.

     Hope this helps,
