Newest version Dynamics 365 software developer toolkit public beta breaks existing projects

Posted on by 265

Visual Studio 2015 auto-updated my version of the Dynamics 365 developer toolkit, from the release made on 9th December 2016 (1.3.2000.8400) to the version released 8th February 2017 (1.3.2000.8489).

On restarting, my Plugin and Workflow projects will not load, with a message: "This project is incompatible with the current edition of Visual studio"and the CrmPackage project will not load, with a message: "This project needs to be migrated".

Has anyone else experienced this?

I noticed that the Toolkit was marked as disabled in the 'Extensions and Updates' dialogue box, maybe because I had restarted one instance of Visual Studio but another was still running. Closing all instances of Visual studio, restarting and then re-enabling the add-in has fixed the problem. Phew.
