Best place to save Industry information for customers

Posted on by 30

Hi,

I have a program in c# where I'm synchronizing customers in GP from salesforce.  Now I've been asked to bring over the Industry (Food & Beverage, Communications, Financial Services, et al).  I'm already storing a legacy CUSTNMBR in COMMENT2.  I don't want to use COMMENT1....And I'm not sure if USERDEF1/USERDEF2 are usable and will retain values when a customer is edited...I'd like to here your opinion on the best place to store this information.    I'm already looking at truncation problems with 31 or 21 characters...

Thanks
Scott Emick

You can display the data from a non-gp table by using Visual Studio Tools (VST) for Microsoft Dynamics GP. You can add the fields to the window with Modifier, then you will need to DAG the modified forms dictionary into an assembly. You can then reference the modified forms dictionary assembly in your VST project. You will need the GPConnNet.dll assembly to be able to use the same user connection which will prevent having to store passwords in configuration files or hardcoded in the assembly. I have sample code for this, which I've presented at previous Convergence and Technical Conference sessions. PM me if you want a copy.

I think I'm going to create my own extension table.  I did a lot of reading yesterday and experimented a bit with the Visual Studio Tools for GP.  I want longer fields than the user defined can provide.  I know I can access custom views with smartlist because I've done so already...The only thing I might not be able to display the data on the customer from a non gp table using the form modifier.  I've got to do more reading to see if I'm able to do that....The requirement is to have the extra data for reports though so I really don't need to see it on the GP customer form.

The user-defined fields will retain the information even when the customer record is edited. If you want to protect these two fields from accidental user edits, you can either use Field Level Security or Modifier to disable them. Finally, to set the prompts for the user-defined fields, go to Sales > Setup >Receivables, then click on the Options button. You can set the prompts at the customer master level only, if that's all you need.
