You can only find the Account index via Smart lists report by adding Account index column to the particular selection list.
You need to find the Account index for the particular entry you can follow the suggestion by Naga.

I don't think you can find an Account Index visible for an End-User other than the Smartlist Report as you mentioned. To me, its purely for technical usage. In most of the windows with Account Number, the Account Index field is placed 'outside the window' or hidden and you can show it by 'Modifying' the window where you can change the Visible property to 'Show' and place it within the window.
