Is it possible to have more than one picture on an item in NAV2017?
If so how and how many pictures per item, is there a maximum?

That's true... I've missed the NAV version. If you're talking about NAV 2017 and next you've the new field type as described by Andrey.
In NAV 2017 Picture field become a MediaSet type field. So you can upload multiple pictures for each item without any customization.

Yes it's possible, with a little customization. Just create a new BLOB field called Picture 2 in the Item table and replicate the code that you find on the standard Picture button in the Item card. It opens page Item Picture (346) where you can easily handle the Picture 2 field.
