Create time-stamp field? Cannot figure it out!

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Good morning all.  I am stumped and hoping someone has come up against this before.  We have created a number of fields in our Opportunities section to track things like the date when a new opportunity is first called by a rep.  We created a new process to monitor the activity field, and to insert the date ()NOW when the field contains data.  Then a calculated field that looks for the date the above process is done, to capture the date in the form.  We did this because the process updates with every logged call, and we want that first contact date to remain constant.  However, every day the new field updates to today's date.  We have it set to copy the (blank) value of the process field if it contains no date, and to insert today's date if the other contains data.  Obviously we are doing something wrong!  Any ideas?  I'm sure the answer is staring us right in the face but we are blocked...  Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks Alex.  Our workflow is set up that way, however the datestamp field (FContactCheck) updates anytime a new call is made.  We wanted the calculated field (First Contact (Opp)) to capture the date of the firsts call and keep that fixed-however it is updating every day.  The datestamp field seems to work, but the calculated field updates to today's date.  Here is how we set it up (after a few false starts):

    Set First Contact (Opp)

If FContactCheck does not contain data

    ACTION

Set First Contact (Opp) to FContactCheck

    ELSE IF

    If FContactCheck contains data

    ACTION

Set First Contact (Opp) to Now()

    Thanks!

    Hi,

I'm not sure - guess we'd have to see the details (workflow steps/calculated field definition).

If I were doing it, I'd probably do it this way:

    - Have a worklow that runs on the activity entity (whichever entity you want to track)

    - In that workflow, verify if that timestamp field in the opportunity is empty, and, if yes, update it with the "createdon" from the activity record
