Project Accounting Returned Retainer amount can't be greater than the project on account amount

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Our client is trying to create a negative billing transaction in project accounting. They are getting the error: Project Accounting Returned Retainer amount can't be greater than the project on account amount. What conditions need to be true to allow them to credit a negative billing transaction? I see that the on account amount for this project is higher than this transaction.

    HI Sean,

Yes, this is the unfortunate truth about PA.. it can't go into the negative zone..  I've witnessed that many times myself, and the only way to get around it was to post a higher transaction first, and then post the negative transaction, so the total project cost never gets below 0$.

I've seen this with PA Employee Expenses, where someone would post a credit transaction, but the total value was higher than the previous posted EE transactions on that project, which would trigger PA to complain and prevent from posting the transaction.
