Import Notes with Data Loader

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi Everyone,

Hoping for some help with importing Notes (Annotations) through the Data Loader. I'm in the middle of a migration project which has been going pretty well using the Data Loader so far, but now on Notes I'm getting an automatic failure on import despite passing validation. I have a hunch that it has something to do with the Object Type field that is supposed to indication which record type the Note is regarding. I couldn't find this field in the Data Loader's mapping stage so I assumed at first that it would not be necessary, but since experiencing this error I am having second thoughts. Anybody out there have experience importing Notes which are set Regarding to various other entities? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Cole

Hi Cole, Providing the Object type code for the annotation would make sense at it needs to know which entity it needs to link to for the query to work. If you need to find the object type code you can use the XRMtoolbox which has Metadata Browser, or you can install the metadata browser solution from the sdk. XRMtoolbox will be alot more convenient for you

Hi Raz, thank you for your response!

I am relatively sure I have all of the parent entities in. There could possibly be a few notes referencing (regarding) unexpected record types, but of the thousands, most should be regarding the Accounts, Contacts, and Opportunities which are already in the system. I would expect that if it was having trouble finding the records referenced in the "regarding" fields that it would give me the corresponding error messages such as: account with id="xxxx-xxxxxxxxxx...." not found" but in this case it is the entire import of Notes itself which is receiving the error, and Data Loader gives me no listed problems with the individual records.

This is why I am unsure what the true problem is - I am given no information which I can see. Although, it is my understanding that regarding fields use an object type id to identify which entity the regarding is pointing to, and I can not map information to this field in Data Loader (as it is not an option in the attribute map set provided in the pre-staging phase for the annotation entity) so I wonder if this has anything to do with my error.

Hi Cole, please try migrating the parent entities first and then loading the notes last ?
