Do you have to run Dynamics SL client software to run Application Server to process reports?

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Is there any way to run Application Server outside of Dynamics SL to process reports automatically? We would like to process reports automatically without having to run the Dynamics SL client so that a user does not have to open the Application Server module just to process reports. Is that even possible or is Application Server only accessible from within a running instance of the SL client?

All of my current research tells me that I have to open the SL client to run Application Server. I am looking for validation for my current understanding.

Thank you for any replies,

Casey M

If the disconnection you are experiencing is what I think it is, then you may need a discussion with your Database admin.

What I have found when the disconnection becomes a regular occurance is that the backups of the database are being done by taking the DB offline and copying it. Since the connection to SL is interrupted, you have to restart the client.

If they are backing up this way then your app server will have to be reset in the same way.

    Butch,

Thank you for the clarification. Actually we used the same VM method for SL7. However, I would often find that the SL client would lose it connection to the server and we would have to reboot the VM weekly. Do you have suggestions for what to look for if I find the new VM doing the same thing?

Your understanding is correct. Some people run it from the server console, but I am not a fan of that. If you have the resources to do virtual machines, I have deployed it by creating a Windows VM and logging it in with a very limited user and running App Server from there. Note that user and VM would also need an Exchange mailbox and Outlook installed if you are mailing the reports.
