We are weighing some upgrade options for year end. I know we can go to 18.3, however this is a challenging site and there are other considerations at play. That said, to consider all options, is there a payroll and year end update planned for GP2018?

There are no updates planned for GP 2018 only for GP 18.x. You will need to upgrade to GP 18.3.
To add to what Richard mentioned, it may be easier to understand the patches as such:
--The last 18.0.xxxx release was/is the 2019 September hotfix
--The 18.2.xxxx releases began with the October 2019 patch and continued through the 2020 mid-year release.
--The 18.3.xxxx release began with the most recent October 2020 release.
Also, per the 'Upgrading to Microsoft Dynamics GP' hot topic, you just have to be on a minimum of 18.00.0496 to be able to upgrade to 18.2.1013 or later, or 18.3.1173 or later.

Just to confuse the matter more, hopefully clarify for some, the change from GP2018 to GP is / was a name change - the patch back in Sept 2019 from 18.00.0469 to 18.2.xxxx was just a patch, not an upgrade - not major code change - sure lots of features got improved, but not like the update from GP2013 to GP2018 or GP (18.2)

Yes, 18.2 and 18.3 are technically updates with features, they are not their own GP version like GP 2018, GP 2016, etc would be.
