To cut a long and sorry story short, we've ended up in a situation where we have our Dynamics on-premises database on a bunch of Excel spreadsheets and need to import the data to a Dynamics 365 instance I have set up.
I've downloaded the "template" and assume that I am supposed to copy and paste each column to the corresponding column in the template. Is this correct?
Any tips would be most appreciated.

We haven't got a solutions file, just "accounts", "contacts", "Opportunities" and "Activities". Excel spreadsheets with a bunch of data with unique identifiers etc.
I've had to use VLOOKUP intensively to get all of the data onto one sheet in the correct rows, but looking good so far ...

You may want to import the solution file first so you have the customization's and relationships between the different entities.
Also I would do a test import with few records first to make sure the imported information is correct.
Import the records based on hierarchy - For example - Import accounts before importing contacts. Import Accounts and Contacts before importing Opportunity etc.
