I am interested in using Contract Administration to maintain data for new and renewal software maintenance contracts for our customers. Does anyone else use the module for this type of contracts?

Yes, it is kind of clunky depending on you use it.
There is a great module from binary stream that I recommend you take a look at. Here is a link.
