Proper method to restore from GP v9 to Dyn 2010, new server already in place

Posted on by 125

Good Morning,

We have an existing GP V 9 server in production. We need to upgrade to Dynamics 2010. I have a server with Dynamics 2010 and SQL 2008 in place and running with company data from the GP 9.0 server. (Was installed by a consultant for testing). I need to do a rollout of Dynamics 2010 in January.

Can someone advise me of the proper method of getting my production GP 9 companies restored to my test Dyn 2010 server? As mentioned, Dyn2010 and SQL 2008 are up and running on that server with stale V 9 data. I have read Dynamics KB Article # 878449.

Any advice to accomplish this properly would be much appreciated. In the current economy we cannot afford the luxury of the consultants.

    Thanks again Sandip,

I think you have clarified it for me. We will only want Dyn 2010 on the new server once finished, and will leave GP V 9 on the old server as a backup for a while. I think with your details I can make this work.

Again, thanks for taking the time to help a newcomer work out the details.

    Dough,

Thanks for more information. So you have Old GP9.0 Server and New TEST Server where you have two SQL Instance one is for GP9.0 and one is for GP2010.

Now on Test Server you want to upgrade GP 9.0 database to GP2010 and then want to restore to GP2010 – When you upgrade GP9.0 to GP2010  into Test Server it already has GP 2010 then you don’t need to restore ‘Upgraded GP2010’ data into ‘new GP2010’ instance.

Question do you want two instance in new server? i.e. for GP 9.0 and GP 2010 ?

As you said that incase upgrade failed you need to continue GP9.0 i.e. your Old Server –

On SQL Instance on New Test Server is enough -Move Data into new Test Server following KB878449 into GP9.0 instance and Upgrade GP9.0 to GP2010.

This way you don’t have to create two sql instance for GP9.0 and GP2010 one instance is enough and in case your upgrade failed on New Test Server you do have your old GP9.0 server.

    Thanks

    Sandip

    Sandip,

To clarify a bit, my test server has side by side installs of GP 9 and DYN 2010. Both are "active" test installs, with stale production data. Could I do a restore of my production GP 9 companies (Separate server) to my test GP 9 server and then upgrade that GP 9 to 2010, and then restore it to my 2010 test install. My end goal is to have my new server, running 2010 be the production server. But, I would like the luxury of keeping my original GP 9 server to fall back on in case we have upgrade issues. Would that scenario work?

Don't mean to appear dense, but this is somewhat new to me.

Thank you for taking the time to answer all so quickly.
