Server Side Sync - Yay or Nay?

Posted on by 602

Now that email router has been deprecated, have most of you migrated to server side sync?  I'm curious about what you like/dislike about it?

I am trying to weigh out the real-life pros and cons of moving over to SSS.  Most of the blogs and posts I read on the subject were regarding CRM 2013 and we are on Dynamics 365 online.

- Is it still an issue that SSS only tracks emails that are currently being tracked, or has that issue been rectified since 2013?

- What are the greatest pain points to using SSS in your opinion?

Thank you!

    Hi,

for the 1st question as you are online you can set up folder level tracking which will track emails into CRM if they land in those folder: technet.microsoft.com/.../dn832121.aspx

The only small pain point is the max 15 Minutes sync between Exchange and CRM. But on the contrary your Outlook will open much faster as you won't use the old Outlook Addin anymore

I think SSS is mature enough now to be the primary setup option.  I would start with SSS on a new or upgraded CRM environment.  Only when it is NOT working and no good work-around would I revert back to email router.

    Hi Barbara,

SSS is very good these days.  You can automatically track all incoming emails for a user\mailbox.  The process can match to existing records and create new ones if needed (contacts and leads) similar to the Email Router.

I found the Server Side Sync simple to configure and removes the need for another server to run the Email Router.

My main pain point - less options to control how quickly emails are synced (with Email Router we could play with Polling settings) though I found it is usually fairly good and happens in under 5 minutes. If SSS doesn't work for any reason understanding why can be hard (though it wasn't simple with the Email Router so it's not really a change).

I would definitely go with SS over Email Router if possible.

    Good Luck!
