Warehousing in Business Central. Ways to Receive, Pick & Dispatch Items

I am just setting up our Business Central account with a migration away from Sage 200. The platform is so powerful and flexible which is great, and is so easy to use with the Excel addin.

I am looking at trying to work out the best way to manage our warehousing. Does Business Central have the capability of registering stock with barcodes etc as it seems like it does with the warehouse worker role? although i am yet to get to that stage yet as the setup of bins and allocating stock seems hugely complex for what we need it to do and unable to pass a demo order to the pick stage.

I'm not sure whether to try and work out how to use the bin setup or try and find some documentation on it in more detail.  Or just to use business central for basic warehousing and manage the locations in a separate web app using oData to extend the capability to receive, pick and dispatch stock as it looks like the bins need to be assigned to the product as opposed to the warehouse.

How to other people currently handle this?

    Hi Graham,

There are multiple ways to configure the location setup in the Business Central.

I am just trying to explain here:

    1) Simple Location code: Where the inventory inbound and outbound can happens directly from the source document and system will track the inventory on the location code.

    2) Location code with Check Mark "require receipt" and "require Shipment": In that case from source document you can not post the inventory. You will have to always the warehouse receipt document for Inbound transactions and Warehouse Shipment for all outbound transaction (Purchase, Sales and Stock Transfer). In this configuration your inventory shall be tracked on the location code only.

    3) Location Code check Mark with the following options 1) Bin Mandatory "YES" 2) require Put-Away "Yes" 3) require pick "Yes" 4) require Movement "Yes" - In this configuration for all inbound transactions system will create the Inventory put away and you can select the required bin code while posting the inventory in the put away screen for for all outbound transactions Inventory picks shall be created with suggested bin code for picking the material. In this configuration you can get the bin wise stock in the system. If you want to move the stock from one bin to another bin Internal movement has to create in the system.

    4) In addition point 3 configuration (considering all check marks for point 3) - if location is enable for "Require Receipt" and "Require Shipment" then in the Bin Tab of the location card system will open the option for selecting the "Receipt Bin Code" and " Shipment Bin Code". In this option you will have to create the common receiving Bin code in the system and select in the BIN TAB --> Receipt Bin Code, Same for Shipment you will have to create the Common Bin code for the Shipment and select on the BIN TAB --> Shipment bin. By doing this when you create the warehouse receipt then system will automatically get the receipt bin code on the warehouse receipt header while posting the warehouse receipt system will generate the "Put-Away document" this is totally differ from "Inventory Put Away" this document having two lines one for taking and another for placing for same item. On the action type placing user can select the bin code for storing the material. Same will happens for outbound transactions warehouse shipment document shall be created and on the header of the warehouse shipment document the Shipment Bin code will come automatically and you can generate the "pick document"  this is differ from the "Inventory Picks". In this pick document system will again create two lines with action types "Take and Place".

    4) Advance warehouse Management Configuration: In this configuration all check mark are applicable of point 4 additional is "Direct Put Away & Pick" - in this configuration system will give to create the zone code and within the Zone you can create the multiples bin code also system will enable the Bin type code master which can be selected on the Bin Master. Transaction flow for all inbound and outbound system will enable the zone option with Put Away Template which contains the rules for suggesting the bin for doing the put away.

Entire warehouse can be enable for ADCS (Automated Data Capture System) in this configuration all the document related to the warehouse like warehouse receipt, put away, warehouse shipment, picks, Internal Movement and physical stock take can come on the handheld gun for registering and posting.

For Barcode we can enable the LOT tracking in the system and LOT can configure for Warehouse tracking also.

I think this explanation may help you!!! For any further details you can write me or reach me on my number +91 7045699269 any time.

    Thanks & Regards,

Bins are setup at a Warehouse level. When goods are received, then we need to Put-Away. When goods are sold, then we need to Pick. Business Central is a very complex system by default. But when being guided, it helps make these complex issues turn into the solution that you need.
