Prevent mixed statuses at a WHS location during production consumption

We have a WHS-enabled raw material item that must allow physical negative inventory.

The location profile is configured with:

  • Allow mixed inventory statuses: No

Initially, the following inventory exists:

  • Item: 343584
  • Warehouse: 40
  • Location: SilosTest1
  • Quantity: 10,000 g
  • Inventory status: Block

When production consumption of 10 g is posted, D365 correctly does not consume the blocked stock. However, it creates:

  • -10 g with status Avail

As a result, the same location contains:

  • 10,000 g Block
  • -10 g Avail

We want the item to remain allowed to go into negative inventory generally. However, we do not want Block and Avail inventory statuses to exist at the same location at the same time.

The expected behavior is:

  • if the location has no inventory, negative inventory may be created,
  • if the location contains inventory with status Block, production consumption should stop with an error,
  • the user should first change the inventory status from Block to Avail,
  • the location should never contain both Block and Avail statuses simultaneously.

The Allow mixed inventory statuses = No setting appears to work for WHS movements, but it does not prevent production posting from creating negative inventory with another status at the same location.

Is there any standard configuration that can enforce this rule during production consumption, or is a custom validation required?

Thank you.

    Hi,

First of all, I would challenge the setting for allowing negative inventory. As you are consuming stock, it seems to be available. Why isn't the on-hand updated in Dynamics 365 before picking the materials?

For the observed behavior, it would be possible to contact Microsoft Support for clarify if this is a bug or intended as per design. If it is per-design, then indeed, you will need to add custom validations. Anyway, I would try to prevent scenarios with negative inventory.

    Hi @AC-03111124-0,

This appears to be unique scenario. As per my knowledge, the ‘Allow mixed inventory status’ parameter checks only for the inventory on hand. It won't be able to consider the one with negative inventory. Can you please elaborate the scenario a bit more.
    Thanks!

    Good day,

Did you have raw material picking work before the consumption?

    Best regards,

    @Laurens van der Tang

    @Nitanshi

No work is created because the Work Policy for this process is set to Never.

The material I process does not become usable until several days later, so I would like the system to block it until it is ready for use. My idea was to configure the material as a WHS-enabled item, so that it could have an inventory status assigned in the warehouse.

I also thought that enabling the Do not allow mixed inventory statuses option would prevent the material from being reported or used incorrectly.

However, I cannot disable negative reporting because production may physically consume less material than the nominal quantity. As a result, the material may still physically be available even though the system inventory balance is already zero.

    Good day,

Thanks for the explanation. What is the reason that the material is not usable for several days?

    Best regards,

    Good day,

Is it not an option to use inventory blocking instead of investory status?

    Best regards,

and also allow to report progress when inventory is blocked

    Good day,

Thanks for trying out! Is the picking list for the production order posted?

    Best regards,
