Building a Business Intelligence solution for GP 2010

Posted on by 860

I am a developer and looking to build a BI solution for our company.  We have CRM & GP 2010 and Im looking at using the Analysis cubes to pull data in from GP.  However, first things first I want to at least familiarize with GP a little since I am very new to it.  Can someone tell me what this page is covering or referring to?

Questions

Are there dashboards in GP 2013 that are not available in 2010 and hence have to be built with the analysis cubes?  Or are they referring to the "capability" to have BI with GP - if one uses the Analysis cubes, reports etc ?

If you're also running SharePoint (either on-premise or online), SSRS really makes it easy to do a lot of reporting of the GP (or any other system) data.  Everyone just goes to the SharePoint site to view the KPIs, dashboards, reporting, or anything else you want to publish.

Works on PC, tablet, and mobile.

If you'd like to see some samples of what we're done, let me know.

    Thanks.

Just got to add my two cents :)

While I would suggest checking out the "Analytics for Microsoft Dynamics GP" by Mark Polino at http://mpolino.com/gp/analytics/

Yes, you can use Excel to access the SSAS Cubes but don't forget you can also use SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) Reports as part of your BI Solution that can also access the SSAS Cubes.

Ok, thats kinda what I thought.  I will be building our own dashboard but it will query from SSAS cubes to avoid impacting performance on the production DB.

    thank you

They are data connections direct to the data base.  Just to note - the Dashboards do not "come" with GP - the data connections do and are very easy to use.

There is also a suite of out of the box SSRS reports and KPI's that are available - I don't have any experience with those - we haven't had much need to use them for our clients.

There are also a number of people like Mahmoud above who publish SQL views that they have created to meet a need - so there are plenty of options to get the detail you want.

There may be some more "out of the box" connections available for 2013 - but they wouldn't be anything you couldn't create yourself if you really needed it.

These dashboards that come with GP 2013 - do they connect to SSAS cubes or directly to the GP database? Maybe thats my real question.

There are so many options for using the power of Excel with data connections to build the BI options.  I would highly recommend watching some of the Excel sessions that are available on demand on Virtual Convergence 2014.  Not only will you get some step by steps, you will also get some great overviews of what is possible.

There is probably not a huge amount of difference between GP 2010 and 2013 - as most of the dashboard functionality is more dependent on your version of Excel instead - I would highly recommend using Excel 2013 if at all possible.

    Welcome to the community,

    That's absolutely such a great thing to be doing, you might need to take a look initially at Mr. Mark Polino Analytics for Dynamics GP, that would be such a great starting;
