Server Move and Upgrade - Best Practice?

My client is currently running GPV10 on SQL2000. Their current SQL server is also the domain controller on their netowrk.

They have purchased a brand new SQL server. It has Server2008 for an operating system already installed. SQL is not yet installed.

How should they proceed?

1. Load SQL2008 onto new server

2. Move GP data over to new server (do they also bring over the tempdb, master, model and msdb databases?)

3. Change compatibility level of the GP databases

4. Test - Test - Test........

 What am I missing?

 Thank you in advance.......

Thanks to both Charles and Ron for their advice.

     I think I have what I need.

I would have to say the VERY FIRST THING TO DO is get a reliable BACKUP!!!!  I cannot stress this enough.  I had an upgrade and server move go bad on me a few years back and had I not had a backup EVERYTHING would have been lost.  I would make 2 backups and put them in 2 different places!!!

There is a knowledgebase article KB878449 on this very subject.

If you want to capture the users, there is a script for capturing them and restoring them on the new server.

You would not bring over the system databases you mentioned.

You will want to script any jobs that are running on the existing server.
