We are working on a plugin for Microsoft Business Central with some customisations using AL: we can download the symbols in VS Code, we can write the code, but cannot deploy into the sandbox. At the moment we have free licenses. We would need an Essentials or Premium license to do this. Once the development has been completed we no longer require the license, it should then be a temporary (1-2 months) one.

We asked one partner and they refused because it's not worth from their point of view. Does anybody know whether a temporary or short-term license is achievable?

@Yash_Mistry Hi Yash, we have already activated the free trial but this doesn't allow us to deploy the extensions from VS Code to BC. So we can write the AL code but we cannot use in BC

@Yash Mistry sure, this is the error in VS Code when I try to deploy:

Hello @MichelangeloR,

Might be two cases you can cross-check these:

-Check whether the user publishing the extension has the SUPER permission set assigned, or assign the required extension publishing permissions in Users.
-Check whether there is a company in that Sandbox that is not an evaluation company and has now expired.

@Yash_Mistry I've checked:

- I definitely have SUPER permission, as well as EXTEN. MGT. - ADMIN where I can see the TableData 2000000206;

- in the Sandbox I see 2 companies, CRONUS UK LTD. which has Evaluation Company ticked; then I see My company which has Evaluation Company unticked.

Anyway, in VS Code I'm using CRONUS UK LTD.

I’m not sure if the code you’re trying to add is causing this issue or if it requires an upgraded license. As a test, try adding a small change—such as a simple column in a table—and check if you’re able to publish it. If that works, then your current code might be sensitive and require elevated permissions. Also, were you able to successfully publish the same using your partner license?

Hello @MichelangeloR,

If any company in the Sandbox is expired, it can throw an error during publishing. You can check this by opening that non-evaluation company and trying to insert, edit, or delete a record. If those actions are restricted, it may indicate that the company has expired.

If that company is not important, you can try deleting it and then publish again in the Sandbox.

I’ve faced the same issue before while publishing, where one expired company inside the Sandbox caused the error.

Hello,

Yes, some temporary option is achievable, but not really as a casual “1–2 month Essentials/Premium license” that you borrow and then move around freely; Microsoft’s docs point to these realistic paths: (1) use a trial/evaluation tenant or Business Central Premium Trial for short-term development/testing, (2) if you’re a partner, buy Business Central Partner Sandbox licenses, which are meant exactly for dev/test in your own tenant, or (3) use a normal paid subscription and then cancel/reduce later, but note Microsoft also says licenses can’t be reassigned on a short-term basis within 90 days just to temporarily cover development. So if you only need a short window, the cleanest official route is usually trial/Premium trial; if you need repeatable dev capacity, Partner Sandbox is the proper route.
