Is this possible

Posted on by 1,695

CRM2016 On premises

Im just at the 'planning stage' on a new entity and wanted to know if this is possible and if so how to do it.

We have customers that submit small text files to us.

I need to be able to write a workflow to interrogate that text file.

I am exploring the possibility that when we create a record in the new entity, that we can put a browse box on and import that file to a field much the same as attaching a note.

1. can a browse dialog be put in place

2. if I cannot import the file to a field .. can I interrogate it if its attached as a note

Any idea's or useful suggestions of how to do this or alternatives would be very helpful

    Hi Pete,

You will have a browse box if you enable notes for the custom entity and add the files as attachment to notes.

There are (custom) workflow actions that can get the attachments for further processing.

But you could also use Flow for this, even if you're on premises.

See my blog post for more details how to trigger a Flow when a record is created/changed:

    2die4it.com/.../connect-dynamics-365-version-9-0-on-premise-with-microsoft-flow

    2die4it.com/.../using-dynamics-365-webhooks-as-the-third-way-to-trigger-flow

So you can collect the files on a OneDrive or in a SharePoint library and use the file name as identifier for further processing with Flow and add the files to records in Dynamics 365.
