Why do checks in PM print out of alphabetical order?

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

When I complete the selection process for checks in PM and print the checks, GP prints about half the checks in alpha order then starts over and prints the remaining checks in alpha order.  I end up with a run of checks from A-Z and then the remainder of the checks from A-Z.  All the checks have the correct check number but the selection batch does not collate the entire batch and alphabetize them.

Checks don't default to print in alpha order, they print in payment number order.  Since most check runs are a single build by vendor id then they would likely be in alpha order as long as that is how you are selecting your vendors and your vendor id's are alphanumeric.

As described it sounds like you might have built the batch and then added additional vouchers to the batch later in the day.  In that case you would print the checks as you describe assuming the defaults.  You can force checks to be in alpha order regardless by changing the  'Sort Checks By' drop down on the print payables check window to Name.
