Using named printers results in "Unable to start printing"

Posted on by 75,730

Client has been using the same named printer setup for years. Suddenly on Friday whenever they try to print they get the message "Unable to start printing" This affects all users on all workstations. I am going to try to select a different default printer and then select the original printer again. I am hoping this will reset the named printers default printer. Is there anything in the back-end I could be checking? Is there a reconcile or check link routine for named printers?

Derek, I am working on this right now. This client uses roaming profiles and the GP client is on another server. I am on this server now and the first thing I noticed is that all the printers are listed as 'Not Connected' under Control Panel. I have referred this to their IT department.

Unless this message comes up only when printing something specific, from what we've seen, this is more of a generic type message that can be caused by a number of different things, such as user permissions, firmware updates, Windows/Office updates making a change on the system, display/font settings, incorrect printer being found or it can't find the printer it's looking for, etc.

Usually we'll see this type of message with another:

    "Unable to start printing."

"Cannot open printer, check printer selection."
