Bundle different activities as a batch

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hello everyone,

I am wondering if anyone has done this or at least attempted.

I need to provide users with the ability to select multiple and different types of Activity records (Phone calls, Letters, Emails etc) all of which will be Active (Open/Draft) and then using a button on the Ribbon to "package" these or bundle them together in one Master task.

In other words I need to associate multiple types of entities to a task which will be created using JS most likely during the Ribbon button click and most importantly display these child activities under the task form.

I know how to do this if it was a parent-child Task to Task or Phonecall to Phonecall, but I am not sure of:

1. How to display different types of Activity entities in an Activity entity (task)

2. What is the relationship I need to create

Any pointers or even alternative solutions would be appreciated. The main focus of this is the ability of users to package multiple activity types into one single task

Thank you

Thanks Alex. I will do a POC for that approach and see where it gets me.

Any other suggestions are more than welcome?

From that custom entity you can have lookups to any activity type (more than one lookup) - it does not limit you to only one. You'll just use that entity to link other activities to the master task.

Maybe create all those lookups directly on the task entity, actually (EDIT: Probably can't do it though.. you'll need that custom "bundle" entity).

As for the subgrid, you might have multiple columns there - one per lookup.

And it's only a workaround, so it does have limitations(mostly, in the user interface).. I don't know if there is a better out of the box solution. Another option might be to create your own grid as a web resource..

    Thanks for your reply Alex.

Doesn't this approach limit the ability to bundle more than 1 Activity type?

Also, just to be clear - are you suggesting having a subgrid on the Task entity which shows associated "CustomBundleEntity" instances? If I do this, the users won't have direct/easy access to the actual Activity - phonecall, email etc

    Thanks

Maybe create a new custom entity with a few lookup field (1 per activity you need to be able to add to the bundle). Display that new custom entity in the subgrid on the "parent" task, and link all other activities to that entity through the lookup.

(Ideally, you'd just display "activities" there, but you can't customize the activity entity to introduce a parent-child relationship)
