I have a hosted control that is a CCA Hosted Application > External Hosted Application. No adapter. Application Hosting = "Use SetParent". But every time I click a toolbar button that fires the this hosted application's default action (to launch it), my external application launches outside of USD instead of residing within the tab (hosted control) I setup for it. Am I missing a step here?

If fiddled with 'Main Window Acquisition time' a bit...but I'm not sure it's helping.
However, after opening and closing and opening and closing my hosted application multiple times (about 10), eventually, USD does capture it and display it within a tab, instead of letting it pop out into its own window. Now just need to figure out how to get it to do that on the first try.
You need to play with "Main Window Acquisition time" a bit over here. Keep increasing the time in milliseconds till the USD is able to catch hold of the application main window handle.

Do you have a Window Navigation rule in place to route the popup to the current tab? The settings would be as follows:
- Set the From field to name of your CCA Hosted Application
- Set the Action field to Route Popup
- Set the Destination Tab as your Hosted Application
