Record Sharing Undone Upon Merge Attempt

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hello,

I have been working for a while now on an issue with sharing and merging records.

In our CRM system, we have two records for the same company that we would like to merge into one, but the user who wished to merge them kept getting an error every time they tried.  The popup is titled "Business Process Error" and the description is just "The entity cannot be updated because it is read-only."  So, I shared the company with the team the user is apart of and gave Read, Write, Delete, Append, Assign, and Share permissions to the team.  The user tried to merge the records again, but got the same error.  When I check the records again, one was still shared with the team, but on the other, the team had been removed.  I re-added the team and had the user try merging again, but the same thing happened.  I tried this about 5 or 6 more times, but to no avail.  I have also tried sharing the records with the team, but did not have the user attempt to merge the records.  When I came back to the record later, it had been un-shared with the team.

At this point, I am at a loss.  I have no idea why this is happening, and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to what could be causing this?

Thanks!

RE: Record Sharing Undone Upon Merge Attempt

    Hi Philip,

When we merge 2 records say R1 to R2, where R1 being the main record and R2 the subordinate, Post merge R2 will me deactivated and all the records associated with R2 (e.g activites, opportunities, cases etc will reparent from R2 to R1.

During this process, if there is any inactive record (most probably case) the you get the error "The entity cannot be updated because it is read-only.".

The other possibility is that you have some custom code/ worfklow which is triggering on either merge or update and then trying to update the record which is inactive.

Basically, you need to check the related records for the record you are merging and check if any of them is inactive.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Philip Heindel,

Plugins and Workflows can cause this issue. It is worth checking Plugins and Workflows in case they are causing the error message to appear.
