Item Code for Different Styles

Posted on by 145

We manufacture a product. This manufactured item can come in approximately 12 different styles.  There are over 20 colors those styles could be finished in.  Iam looking for suggestions on how to set these items up .  I would prefer not to have a seperate item code for each style/color.  Any suggestions?  Thanks

A planning BOM is an APICS related term around forecasting.   You would create a 'fake' top level item with 2 decimals, for example, then you would build the BOM as such...

    TOP LEVEL

    Blue .50

    Yellow .10

    Red .20

    Green .20

Then you could forecast 100 top level items and MRP would plan for 50-Blue, 10-Yellow, 20-Red, .   It does not save the number of items, but could reduce the planning and forecasting work.

    Dan,

Thanks for the response.  I was hoping to cut down on the total number of item numbers by not creating a unique number per style per color.  What do you mean by a "planning BOM"?  This is in the construction industry with the color being a powder.  We would prefer to have the color as an inventory item due to the wide range of cost varances between the colors.

Many of the clients I have worked with over the years in a similar situation, have preferred to create the unique item numbers because it makes inventory planning and BOM accuracy much easier.   With that scenario,  you could create a 'planning BOM' if you are forecasting the different colors to make that part easier.   I would at the least create a BOM for each of the styles and then find a way to handle the colors, either via David's suggestion with the Configuratory, or swapping items on the picklist (I assume the colors are dyed so planning and management of inventory could be done via visual cues).  This could be more or less complicated depending how difficult it is to deal with the colors.   What industry is it in?

You could set these up each of these colors and styles as a non-Inventory type (e.g. Services), create a Super BOM with all colors and styles included on the BOM, then create and assign two options of "Color" and "Style" to the BOM.  Use Sales Configurator to build specific combinations of the manufactured product.
