Item Engineering data on Purchase Order

ReportReport

I'm trying to modify the Purchase Order to include Revision Level from the Item Engineering Data Card. Since Manufacturing is Third Party, I've tried using the rw_TableHeaderString function but have not had any luck with it. The report prints, but the field does not populate. My other calculated fields populate fine though. Here's the expression as it is now:

FUNCTION_SCRIPT(rw_TableHeaderString 346 "Item Engineering Data" popPOLineRollupTemp.Item Number 0 18)

The Result Type is set to String. I've tried changing the key field for the window to other tables, such as Item Master. I've also tried changing the field number 18 to other numbers in case that's not the correct field number in the Item Engineering Data card.

I'm using the POP Purchase Order Blank Form (modified) and have put the field in the H3 Item Header 1 as well as the H4 Comment3 Header.

Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

Thank you!

    Sharon -

Have you tried linking the IVR10015 table to the PO report in Report Writer, so you can just add the REVISIONLEVEL_I field directly?  Here is a link to an article on adding table relationships in Report Writer written by David Musgrave blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/.../rw-making-a-one-to-many-table-relationship-behave-as-one-to-one

I did try to add it as a table and found that it was not a table I could add. I think this is because Manufacturing is considered third party. David notes that as his first reason on not being able to link tables:

The tables are defined in different product dictionaries.  While a third party product can see all the core Dynamics.dic tables, Microsoft Dynamics GP cannot see third party products and two third party products cannot each other.

Indeed. Where was my mind?  David Musgrave is the resident expert on this topic and contributes and has been quoted liberally in the community.  I had hoped invoking his name might make him "appear" so to speak.  It is also my practice to give credit where credit is due.  David has a number of posts on the topic, and I would recommend referring to his work.  In particular, he has an article about using ADO to access data via SQL in report writer, albeit somewhat dated - blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/.../rw-accessing-any-sql-data-from-a-report-example

If you were not married to Report Writer, as a tool for the job, you might take a look at doing this in SSRS. Implementing the manufacturing product usually means writing SQL views to connect data that is otherwise disconnected.  If the Purchase Order report needs to come out of GP, then something like Forms Printer or GP Reports Viewer can help replace standard GP reports with more flexible SSRS versions.  www.gpreportsviewer.com/demos

    Hi Sharon,

This is indeed one of the limitations of RW.. if the tables wasn't part of the original query to pull the data to build the report, then it is very difficult to bring it in..

David has recently published an article how you can achieve this by using GP Power Tools (aka GPPT) if you own it.. though it is not very expensive and worth every penny you pay for it..

    winthropdc.wordpress.com/.../gppt-adding-data-from-any-sql-table-to-sop-documents

It basically explains how you can leverage the scripting tools of GPPT to add any SQL resource to the SOP report in his example, but this could easily be adapted to the POP blank report.

Another option which would probably work too, is to use VBA and ADODB queries to pull in the data (as directed by Harry's previous reply) : blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/.../rw-accessing-any-sql-data-from-a-report-example

It's a fairly old post (2008), but should still be functional.

    Good luck.

Thank you both for the responses. I'll take a look at the blog on using VBA and ADODB queries. I don't think the GP Power Tools will be of interest to this client at this time, since it is only for pulling in one field. But maybe in the future.

I find it interesting that I can pretty easily pull in data from Extender but not Manufacturing. It seems that it should work similarly, since both are third party. Is there a reason for the difference?

Thanks again. I really appreciate the suggestions :-)
