RE: Bar coding hardware question
It is not clear what the nature of the Andriod device is that you've looked at. Is it using the camera to do barcode reading or just allowing data entry using an input form? Is it industrial or consumer grade?
Generally the dedicated barcode hardware is more resilient to being dropped/abused and has longer lifespan. Don't skimp, it's amazing how much slow barcode readers can harm productivity, even distance range of scanning can be a factor as we've found.
It may be that the Andriod devices will give a richer experience to the user due to bigger touch displays if they are tablets. There are also cradles with hardware barcode scanners for tablets on the market that mix things up a bit. Unfortunately without out some concrete examples its difficult to compare.
You need to look at cost of onwership, the good barcode reading hardware is very expensive, but on the other hand should last a long time. If it is consumer grade Andriod devices, they may need renewing more frequently.
Depends on your environment, food manufacturing/heavy industrial vs say light assembly are very different.
Also how happy are your network management team at having the different types of devices on the network from security perspective. How locked down are they?
I'm certain there is more to consider like easy of charging, and battery life. Also if the units are going to be held or on belt or day or if they will be at a workstation bench of some kind.
Lots to consider, most of it specific to your environment too.
Tim.
