June 15, 1987 was the day that a VERY green young man started his adult life by joining a small software company right out of college. I was part of a new hire group of 11 new product support specialists (picture below). It was the largest hiring group in the companies history at the time as Great Plains Software had just 150 employees when I started.
I won't bore you with the details of my entire career, but suffice it to say that I've met and worked with some amazing people in the past 30 years. At Great Plains Software we talked about the 3 C's (Caring, Commitment and Courage) that it took to improve the lives and business success of our partners and customers. And after a point we added a 4th C . . . Community! The community (people) have always been the most important aspect of delivering on a collective vision to improve peoples lives through software. I realize it every year at GPUG Summit, various partner events, every time I meet with a partner or customer and most recently with the amazing community spirit surrounding #FabrikamDay.
So on my 30 year anniversary of starting in this industry, I'll leave you with this thought; Software is simply bits and bytes and the bits and bytes will change over time like it has tremendously in the past 30 years . . . but the community of people that have the caring, commitment and courage to improve someone else's life through the software is the most important part.
30 years and counting!
wonderful, good learning
