Upgrading my organization from 2013R2 (12.00.2132) to 2016R2, but it will take place in early January. Just want to check the proper patch order here:

  • Apply 2017 year end patch to current GP2013R2 server and close out 2016. Accountants may start entering 2017 data in the first week of January.
  • When organization is ready for the upgrade, install 2016r2 (16.00.0552) on new server, install 2017 year end patch, then upgrade (run gp utilities) OR install 2016r2 on new server, upgrade/run GP utilities, apply 2017 year end patch, then run GP utilities?

Nothing wrong with first step. As for step 2, You can apply the 2017 YE patch to your 2016 environment then run the upgrade. Since updates are cumulative, the easiest way is to copy the YE msp file into the Updates folder on the installation media prior to doing your 2016 install and the installer will take care of applying the update and upgrading all the environment with the latest YE updates, all in one step.

Thank you for your quick reply Mariano. Yes that seems like a quicker idea. So on my GP2016R2 media in my updates folder, remove KB3194385 and replace it with the 2017 YE update?
